What made you decide to write this type of book?
I didn’t want to do academic stuff. That’s too boring. I didn’t want to write the “typical” self-help book, again, too boring. I had heard so many women say that they could never get past the first chapter or two of most self-help books so I just decided to do it differently. I was reading one of my “chick-lit” books and thought, these people need therapy and that’s where it all started. I decided to have a pretend person go to therapy and follow her progress.
What else are you going to write about?
I’ve already got #2 under way. It’s about weight loss issues. The same character is going back to understand why she put on weight and how to take it off in a healthy way. The number of “issues” for women is endless so I imagine I’ll write a lot more. I’d really love input from people about topics they might like to see me write about.
Why don’t you spend more time describing your characters?
I’m trying to write so that everyone can see themselves in the protagonist and her family. If I give too many details it will turn off some people. I’m just trying to help lots of people and if you make characters too specific then people can’t identify with them.
Where do you get your titles?
The titles come primarily from statements or questions that I hear over and over in therapy sessions. When I hear it enough times, I know that it’s a “universal” issue and that it would make good material for a book.
